When his parents are arrested for tax evasion, 17-year-old suburban high school playboy Adam Stiles is forced to trade his life of popularity and leisure for the workaday world inhabited by his mother's brother, Uncle Wyatt. Uncle Wyatt, who runs a struggling landscaping and lawn-care business with his wife's brother, Cody, sees an opportunity to remove the boy's ingrained laziness and snobbery by putting him to work for the summer.

Adam chafes under the new responsibilities, until his job puts him in the backyard of Bret Garrison, an 18-year-old "poor little rich boy" who wastes no time in expressing his attraction for Adam. Adam sees in Bret an opportunity to quickly climb his way back up the high school social ladder, and he seizes it without hesitation.

But as the summer continues, Adam finds himself making new and unexpected friends. Among them are Hannah and Henry Tharp, a pair of fun-loving teenage twins, and Shea Morgan, a sweet, attractive, but socially awkward young writer. As his friendship with Hannah, Henry, and Shea grows, Adam begins to realize that there may be a lot more to life than breaking his way back into the "In-Crowd".
